Glaucoma: Causes and Global Statistics

Welcome to the Glaucoma treatment site.

Glaucoma is an eye disease that is usually associated with increased pressure within the eye, which, if left untreated, compresses the fragile blood vessels supplying the optic nerve responsible for sending messages to the vision center of the brain.

A world health organization report indicates that globally, over 166 million people suffer from visual impairment of which 37 million are effectively blind, with Glaucoma being the second leading cause of blindness (World Health Organization Fact Sheet No 282, November 2004).
